Keeping associates safe is something that is considered in every process in every Honda facility. Although safety is every associate’s responsibility, Honda’s team of dedicated safety personnel are tasked with enhancing workplace safety and raising awareness.
Recently, four Honda associates took their personal safety responsibilities to the next level, obtaining their Advanced Safety Certificate (ASC®) from the National Safety Council (NSC). They are:
- Tony Strahm, Marysville Auto Plant (MAP) Environmental Compliance Planning and Strategy for Facilities;
- Paula Leonard, Production Engineering Business Units (PEBU) Plant Safety Leader;
- Madison Summers, HDMA Engineering Development Program (EDP) Regional Operations Industrial Hygiene; and
- Jen Nolting, East Liberty Auto Plant (ELP) Paint Safety Lead.
They each earned their Advanced Safety Certificates, making them four of just 13 Honda associates to reach this level of certification.
This certificate program is a prestigious, nationally recognized safety curriculum based on proven best practices. The ASC® program builds upon knowledge of compliance requirements to further safety education. It also sharpens leadership skills to drive fundamental safety change.
“There are many ways to help make Honda a safe place to work” says Mark Resser, the Safety Department manager. “Associates wanting to go a little further should consider the ASC® program as a development opportunity. Whether you take one class or earn the certificate, this program helps develop a common dialogue for how we identify safety hazards and how we can continuously improve.”
And this commitment and dedication is celebrated by Honda’s leadership team as well.
“This is a great example of associates going the extra mile to make themselves and Honda better,” said Tom Lake, senior vice president of planning and strategy. “That’s the ‘Honda Way’ I know. Congratulations to Paula, Tony, Madison, and Jennifer for making the extra effort to create a safer workplace for all Honda associates!”
For individuals on a safety career path, the ASC® program provides a starting point, a clear roadmap, and best-in-class educational experiences to develop fundamental skills. The certification process covers in-detail topics that safety practitioners are likely to face every day, including best practices and proven problem-solving methods.
