TMP-GA associate Elvis Chu has a few things in common with the company where he has built a career over the last six years.
For one, he is passionate about automobiles.
In addition to spending his day focused on building the best transmissions for Honda customers, he also modifies and enjoys tinkering on cars in his free time.
Secondly, he has been known to do a little racing.
“I am a car enthusiast,” Chu said. “I’ve been working on cars as a hobby for years, but I also enjoy racing. I enjoy taking my Honda S2000 to the local racetrack.”
And thirdly, his own personal values align closely with Honda’s company values.
“The challenging spirit of racing and the joy of creating resonate most with me, and I appreciate Honda’s focus on the customer,” he said.
In fact, Chu considers it a dream come true to work at Honda.
“I love working at Honda. I love the principles of the Honda philosophy and the cool, innovative products we create,” he said.
Chu’s dream career began in 2015 when he first joined Honda as a quality engineer at the Transmission Manufacturing Plant in Georgia (TMP-GA).
As a child, he had always been fascinated with how things work and move. He liked to take things apart, understand how they worked, and put them back together again.
Now, as an engineer in the Aluminum Processing Department (APD), his days are focused on supporting the day-to-day quality needs of transmission production at TMP-GA, and guaranteeing that only the best 10AT transmissions are going out the door to our customers.
“I always get a thrill out of talking to our customers and seeing and hearing the joy they have in our product,” he said, “That makes me proud.”
One of his main jobs is working on the Coordinate Measurement Machine (CMM) programing, which measures the geometry of physical objects by sensing distinct points on the surface of objects with a probe.
Chu is also a member of the plant’s New Model project team and supports the launch of new models in his department from the development stage to mass production. This includes preparing for evaluation and maturing the new model.
He regularly trains associates in the areas of problem solving, new model inspection methods, and how to correctly measure features.
“Since I’ve been at Honda, I’ve been able to learn so many new things, and now I have the opportunity to teach others,” he said.
Chu feels very fortunate for all the opportunities Honda has given him over the years, and likes being able to share these problem-solving skills with other associates in his department.
He enjoys the problem-solving aspect of his job because it is challenging, and it’s always rewarding to identify a gap, create a countermeasure, and develop a successful solution.
“I am able to share, teach, and, most importantly, watch my fellow associates expand their knowledge and grow their careers…and that means a lot to me.”
